Homework due 01/13/09
Do problems 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 & 9 on page 136 of your textbook. You may want to keep your formula sheets or your notes from class on the rules of differentiation handy when attempting these.

I don't see much of a correlation between my f'(x) values and -sin(x) values. For example for the value 0.6 I did:
cos(0.6+0.001)-cos(0.6)/.001
that resulted in -824.5108443 whereas -sin(0.6) is -.5646424734
Firstly, make sure you're in radian mode for any calculator calculations. Next, make sure that you are typing it into your calculator correctly. I just did the calculations myself and I'm getting a value close to the -sin(x) value for that particular point you cited. I have a feeling you may have typed it into the calculator just as you have typed it into your comment on the post. This means that you have subtracted cos(0.6)/0.001 from cos(0.6001) instead of (cos(0.6001)-cos(0.6))/0.001 Hope this helps.
Students should feel free to use this blog as a vehicle for exchange of ideas and concepts. If some topics in Calculus are particularly challenging then try browsing some of the "Reference Websites" included in this blog. There you will find some neat tutorials for concepts we have covered in class and some great visualization tools as well. Ofcourse, Calculus is not without its history and so there are many links dedicated to the history of calculus and the history of math in general.
